At City2Surf 2025, the BESIX Watpac team ran with purpose — raising more than $91,000 for the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation in honour of Massimo Baroni.
Massimo was just 21 when he was diagnosed with brain cancer in April 2019. Despite everything, he continued to live life fully — travelling, studying, and even completing City2Surf just three months after his diagnosis. As his mum Lucy (pictured) shared, “For Massimo, adventure was his thing…he created opportunity after opportunity.”
Massimo’s connection to the BESIX Watpac team is deeply personal. His father, Max Baroni, is part of the team and the combined fundraising effort was driven by a shared determination to honour Massimo’s life, show support for the Baroni family and continue the fight for a cure.
“Massimo wanted his legacy to be the hunt for a cure, and we know this to be true,” Lucy said. “We now use his name as our mantra to continue the fight and to always feel his zest for life — Live to the MASS!”
Massimo’s strength and spirit made him an extraordinary ambassador for Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. Today, his family, friends and the wider BESIX Watpac team are ensuring that legacy lives on — turning grief into action and impact.
