Cure Brain Cancer Foundation is excited to announce one of the biggest developments ever, in DIPG research history. Following a groundbreaking research project and the results of 14 years of work, Dr David Ziegler, Children’s Hospital of Sydney, has been awarded a grant by the DIPG Collaborative for a clinical trial that offers real hope to children fighting DIPG/DMG. This grant will expand the clinical trial into trial sites at 18 hospitals, worldwide.

After receiving the grant, Dr. Ziegler shared, “We think it’s the most effective drug treatment that anyone’s tested in any of the DIPG models in the lab. We are very hopeful that we are really going to make a difference.”

This grant was awarded through the DIPG Collaborative, of which Cure Brain Cancer Foundation is a proud Foundational member. The DIPG Collaborative is made up of over 25 foundations cooperatively funding between $1-3 million to DIPG research every two years. In 2020, the DIPG Collaborative awarded a total of USD2,680,509 across six world-class research projects. Dr Ziegler’s grant is one of many that will be awarded this year through the Collaborative.

Dr. Hamza Anwer, Head of Research at CBCF says, “It is important that CBCF focuses on collaborations like this, especially when we’re starting to see real impacts for children with brain cancer. It is encouraging to see the impact of our collaborative funding in generating results for our community.”

The clinical trial will test a combination therapy in children with DIPG/DMG for the first time. The drug combination has been the most effective treatment ever tested on pre-clinical models of the disease.

This clinical trial is built upon the results of a previous research project funded by Cure Brain Cancer Foundation through the DIPG Collaborative in 2018. Lead by Dr. Maria Tsoli, Children’s Hospital of Sydney, it explored polyamine pathway metabolism as a novel therapeutic option for DIPG.

We look forward to keeping you apprised of the progress of this incredible trial and the groundbreaking work of Dr. Ziegler.
