On 12 July 2007, Marcella Zemanek said her final goodbyes to her husband of nearly 30 years, broadcasting legend Stan Zemanek. Since then, Marcella has dedicated her life to improving outcomes for people impacted by brain cancer, and ten years on from the passing of her husband, Marcella will be taking part in her biggest physical challenge yet. She’ll be competing in the 2017 Sun Herald City2Surf on August 13, and has set herself a target of raising $100,000 for vital
The 14km walk will lead Marcella past some of the most memorable locations of her marriage to Stan, including the site of their engagement and a number of former homes in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs. And when Marcella crosses the finish line on Bondi Beach, she’ll be returning to the suburb where she grew up. At the age of 71, this will be the first time Marcella has taken part in the iconic event, and she’ll be doing so alongside her daughter Gabby and grandchildren Hamish and Chloe.
Ahead of the big day on August 13, Marcella said;
“This year, we should’ve been celebrating Stan’s 70th birthday, but instead, our family are remembering 10 years since we lost him to this awful disease. I miss him every day, but I’m also inspired by him every day, and I know he’ll be pushing me along every step of the City2Surf. Especially Heartbreak Hill! I’ve been training to make sure I get a good time, but as I’ve never done the race before, any time will be a personal best!
I’ve always been absolutely hopeless at asking for money, but if I can’t ask now, when can I? When I first set up my fundraising page, my goal was just $800, but thanks to Ben Fordham and his listeners, I’m now well above that. If you can spare anything to go towards brain cancer research, I would be eternally grateful, and I know Stan would too. Thank you so much.”
