A Mission to Make a Difference
Twelve-year-old Shane has a big dream: to one day become a scientist and help find a cure for cancer.
A former student of Berwick Primary School and now in Year 7 at Kambrya College, Shane has always been curious about how things work. But a childhood conversation with his mum changed everything.
“I remember going shopping with my mum and watching her donate money to children’s cancer foundations. I asked her why the kids couldn’t just get medicine from the doctor, and she told me that there is no cure – only treatment to try and control it.”
That moment sparked something in Shane. He began reading about how cancer affects the body and why finding a cure is so complex.
“In Year 2, we did a science experiment at school, and I remember thinking: ‘Why aren’t we using science like this to find a cure for cancer?’”
Now a regional-level competitor in swimming, cross-country, track and field and badminton, Shane recently won the Sports Award at his primary school. He was also selected to represent at the State Cross Country Championships.
“I truly believe that every child has something they’re good at, but you have to work hard, stay committed, and keep trying until you discover it. I’ve failed many times, but I never give up. Each setback has only made me stronger.”

Motivated by his family’s support and a desire to help others, Shane has decided to use his passion for running to raise funds for brain cancer research. He’ll be taking part in Run Melbourne, proudly fundraising for Cure Brain Cancer Foundation.
“Fundraising is a great way to support this cause, bring the community together, and raise awareness. I’ve read articles and heard stories about how these fundraising efforts truly help people in need.
I’m a determined person, and so far, I’ve achieved many of my personal goals. I believe that if we all work together, we can find real solutions.”
